So, I’ve dove into this topic before, but there is so much more to cover, so I thought we should go ahead and take a closer look.
The term “Functional drink” covers everything from caffeinated drinks to kombucha to mushroom elixirs to CBD and hemp-infused cocktails. It’s a beverage with a ‘function’ - with purposefully used ingredients that give something more than just flavor.
This category of beverage is all the rage in the alcohol-free beverage space and increasing in popularity. Why? Because many people may want to give up alcohol and the poor side effects that come with it, but they are still hopeful for that initial uplift and sense of relief.
I often think of the functional category as a stepping stone into the alcohol-free beverage industry. Yes, there are lots of functional drinks that don’t necessarily fit the ‘alcohol-free cocktail’ image, like matchas and coffees, but because of the amazing botanicals and amino acids we are awakening to, we now have access to feel good and good for you drinks that will mimic any traditional alcohol cocktail you want.
And that’s the beauty of this space. We have options now. Lots of them, and what I wish for you to take away from this Substack, if nothing else, is this:
Get CREATIVE!
Open your mind to something new, something different, and something that could SUPPORT your life.
Alcohol has had a grip on our culture through our social habits and behaviors; that doesn’t need to be the case any longer.
That doesn’t mean we need to give up on the hope of a refreshing drink after a long day of work, a soothing nightcap, or raised classes in celebration of this life.
Are Function Drinks Right For You?
Self-awareness. I have learned that knowing yourself well enough to recognize when and where you need boundaries and support is extremely important. It is one of the main reasons why I started The Caim Circle - to help you take that inward dive, to take note of what you truly want and need, and to learn to love yourself enough to provide for yourself.
Knowing if Functional Drinks are going to be a benefit to your life is something only you can know. If you are worried about getting ‘high’, then I don’t recommend cannabis-infused products, but if you are just looking for stress relief then I can easily recommend a few brands and or simple ingredients that I believe are non-triggering.
But first…
What are the Benefits of Functional Drinks:
Some common benefits include getting an energy boost, cognitive enhancement, immunity support, stress and anxiety management, as well as gut and digestive health.
And you can have all of these benefits in a legitimate cocktail… which is super cool.
Pointers For Choosing Your Functional Drinks:
Read Labels: Look for drinks with ingredients that match your health goals (e.g., vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, probiotics).
Avoid Excess Sugar: Many functional drinks can be high in sugar, so opt for those with natural sweeteners or low sugar content.
Consider Personal Needs: Select drinks that address specific health concerns or dietary preferences (e.g., gluten-free, vegan).
Using Functional Drinks Properly:
Follow Serving Recommendations: Consume the recommended serving size to avoid overconsumption of active ingredients.
Timing: Use functional drinks at appropriate times for their intended benefits (e.g., energy drinks before workouts, probiotic drinks with meals).
Incorporate into Diet: Integrate functional drinks into your overall diet rather than relying on them as sole sources of nutrition.
Monitor Effects: Pay attention to how your body responds to different functional drinks and adjust consumption based on your health and wellness goals.
Safety Considerations:
Consult with Healthcare Providers: If you have specific health conditions or concerns, consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating new functional drinks into your diet.
Avoid Dependence: Use functional drinks as supplements to a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle rather than relying on them excessively.
Quality and Source:
Choose Reputable Brands: Opt for functional drinks from trusted manufacturers known for quality and transparency in ingredient sourcing. This requires RESEARCH! Look into sourcing (not just for your drinks but for anything you are purchasing ;)
Check Certifications: Look for certifications such as organic, non-GMO, or NSF Certified for Sport, depending on your preferences and needs.
By understanding the purpose, ingredients, and proper use of functional drinks, we can integrate them effectively into our diets to support our daily health and wellness goals.
We should all be prioritizing balance and moderation in consumption. Just because it’s on the shelf… doesn’t mean that it’s good for you.
Understanding Compounding Adaptogens and Nootropics
One of the things you will find with most brands is that they are making propriety blends of adaptogens and nootropics in hopes of providing a specific effect.
Parch Non-Alcoholic Agave Cocktails, for example, use a blend of Ashwaganda (for stress), L-Theanine (for mental clarity and focus), and American Ginseng.
When compounding adaptogens and nootropics, it’s important to consider a few specific things.
Synergistic Effects: Some adaptogens and nootropics may work together synergistically to enhance cognitive function and reduce stress more effectively than when used alone.
Dosage and Safety: Ensure proper dosing based on individual needs and health conditions. Start with lower doses and gradually increase as needed.
Personalization: Everyone responds differently to these compounds. Personalize your stack based on your specific goals (e.g., stress reduction, mental clarity) and individual response.
Quality and Purity: Choose high-quality supplements from reputable sources to ensure safety and efficacy.
Examples of Combinations:
Ashwagandha + L-Theanine: Combines stress reduction with relaxation and improved focus.
Rhodiola Rosea + Bacopa Monnieri: Enhances mental clarity, memory, and resilience to stress.
Panax Ginseng + Lion’s Mane Mushroom: Boosts cognitive function, and memory, and supports brain health.
Caution:
Consultation: Before compounding adaptogens and nootropics, consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have underlying health conditions, are pregnant, or are taking medications.
Monitoring: Monitor your response carefully, especially if combining multiple substances, to ensure they are well-tolerated and effective.
By carefully compounding adaptogens and nootropics, you can potentially enhance cognitive function, manage stress, and support overall well-being effectively. Always prioritize safety, individualization, and quality when selecting and combining these substances.
The Science of "Buzz Without the Booze"
When we talk about getting a "buzz" from a beverage, we’re essentially referring to the effects that alcohol has on the body and mind.
Alcohol impacts the central nervous system, acting as a depressant, which slows down brain activity and leads to the relaxing, euphoria-inducing effects that many associate with drinking.
The key here is that alcohol alters the brain’s neurotransmitter balance, particularly increasing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and inhibiting glutamate, which results in feelings of relaxation, lowered inhibitions, and pleasure.
Functional non-alcoholic drinks, on the other hand, provide similar feelings of relaxation and mental clarity, but without the alcohol. Instead, these drinks rely on a variety of plant-based compounds—adaptogens, nootropics, and botanicals—that interact with the body in ways that mimic or enhance the effects of alcohol, but without the same harmful consequences.
Adaptogens and Nootropics: A New Kind of Buzz
Adaptogens are compounds derived from certain herbs and plants that help the body cope with stress. These herbs, such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, and holy basil, work by balancing the body's response to stress, lowering cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, and supporting the adrenal glands. When consumed, adaptogens can create a calming effect, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of relaxation without sedation. This is often referred to as a "stress relief buzz"—a gentle feeling of mental calmness that allows you to let go of stress without feeling drained.
Nootropics, also known as smart drugs or cognitive enhancers, boost mental function. Ingredients like L-theanine (found in green tea) or ginseng are commonly used in these drinks. They promote relaxation while also increasing focus and alertness. L-theanine, for example, increases the production of alpha waves in the brain, which are associated with a calm yet focused state. This creates a "buzz" that feels more energizing than intoxicating, making you feel mentally sharp while also relaxed.
Botanicals and Herbal Extracts: Many functional drinks use botanicals like yerba mate, hibiscus, and chamomile for their mood-enhancing properties. Yerba mate provides caffeine and theobromine, which deliver a stimulating effect similar to that of a cup of coffee, but with a smoother, less jittery energy. Chamomile and valerian root, on the other hand, are used for their sedative properties, helping to calm the body and mind and encouraging a restful state. These herbs together create a diverse and dynamic experience that can range from energizing to deeply relaxing.
Why the "Buzz" Feels Different for Everyone
While the ingredients in these drinks are designed to support relaxation and mental clarity, it’s important to understand that the experience can vary greatly from person to person.
Here are some factors that influence how someone might feel when drinking these functional beverages:
Body Chemistry: Just like with alcohol, the way someone reacts to functional drinks is influenced by their individual biology. Some people may feel a sense of calm and focus, while others might experience an uplift in energy or even a mild sense of euphoria. It all depends on how the body processes and responds to the ingredients, which varies based on things like genetics, stress levels, and overall health.
Tolerance: Individuals who regularly consume caffeine, adaptogens, or nootropics may have a higher tolerance for these compounds. Someone who drinks coffee or uses herbal supplements may feel less of a “buzz” from these drinks compared to someone who is new to these ingredients. Tolerance can also depend on a person’s diet and lifestyle—someone with a more balanced, holistic routine might feel the effects more strongly than someone who isn’t as attuned to their body.
Mental State: The mental and emotional state of the drinker plays a significant role in how they perceive the effects of these drinks. If someone is feeling particularly stressed, anxious, or emotionally drained, they may experience a more pronounced calming effect. On the other hand, if someone is already in a relaxed state, they may simply feel more energized or focused, which can feel different but equally pleasant.
Quantity and Dosage: Like any supplement or functional ingredient, the amount you consume can drastically change the outcome. Some ingredients, like adaptogens, require consistent use over time to build up their effects, while others—like nootropics—can provide more immediate effects. It’s important to start with smaller quantities, especially if you’re unfamiliar with these ingredients.
Drinking too much of a functional beverage could lead to overstimulation (from caffeine or nootropics) or drowsiness (from sedative herbs like valerian root). Each person's ideal dosage is different, and what works for one person might not work for another.
Why Quantity Matters: Finding the Right Balance
Understanding the right quantity and dosage of functional drinks is crucial. Here’s why:
Cumulative Effect: Many of the ingredients in functional drinks, like adaptogens, work best with consistent use. Taking one or two drinks may not give you the full benefit, especially if the goal is long-term stress relief or cognitive enhancement.
Over time, adaptogens and nootropics help to balance the body’s systems, but it requires patience. People should understand that moderation and regular consumption can offer more lasting benefits than drinking in excess.
Avoiding Overstimulation: Some functional drinks contain caffeine or other stimulants that can lead to an overstimulating effect if consumed in large quantities. This could result in jitteriness, heightened anxiety, or difficulty sleeping. Similarly, drinks with sedative ingredients should be consumed carefully to avoid feeling too drowsy or lethargic.
Knowing how much is enough for your body’s needs is key to a balanced experience.
Personal Sensitivity: Since everyone’s body chemistry is different, it’s essential to start slow and gauge how a drink affects you. What works well for one person might leave another person feeling too tired or too hyper. It’s about finding the sweet spot—listening to your body and adjusting accordingly.
Functional drinks offer a new, exciting way to experience the “buzz” of socializing or unwinding, without the hangover or negative side effects of alcohol. However, because the effects can vary based on individual factors—such as body chemistry, mental state, and sensitivity to the ingredients—it’s important to approach these drinks with mindfulness and awareness.
Understanding the proper quantity and dosage will ensure you get the best possible experience and truly enjoy the benefits of a buzz that’s both enjoyable and sustainable.
The Brands I Trust & Why
In a world filled with health-conscious alternatives, it’s important to be discerning about what we consume. Many so-called "clean" products still contain lab-derived ingredients, artificial additives, carcinogenic preservatives, or questionable sourcing practices. That’s why I’m incredibly intentional about the functional products I support and consume.
Today, I want to highlight four of my absolute favorites: Rasasvada Restorative Spirits, Curious Elixirs, All the Bitter, and Wooden Spoon Herbs. These brands stand out for their commitment to truly natural ingredients, ethical sourcing, and holistic well-being.
Rasasvada Restorative Spirits
In Indian philosophy, rasāsvāda refers to aesthetic consciousness - a perception of pleasure or taste of bliss - in which one gets the power of healing and the power of knowing the mind. Rasasvada offers a unique take on wellness beverages by formulating botanical spirits designed to nourish and restore.
Unlike many alternatives that rely on synthetic flavoring, Rasasvada is crafted with whole-plant extracts, adaptogens, and herbs that support both body and mind.
Rasasvada is also at the forefront of supporting metabolic health through its naturally derived botanicals. According to their research on boosting GLP-1 naturally, their formulations include ingredients that help stimulate GLP-1 production—a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels, appetite, and digestion. By integrating plants like bitter melon, gentian root, and dandelion, Rasasvada supports both digestive wellness and metabolic balance without artificial additives. Unlike alcohol, this drink with ADD years to your life rather than taking them away.
I love how these spirits promote my health and well-being while also elevating the experience I am in by encouraging me to sip, savor, and enjoy every moment. The brand's commitment to ethical sourcing ensures that every ingredient has been carefully selected for its purity and potency.
Curious Elixirs
Curious Elixirs are more than just non-alcoholic cocktails; they are crafted with functional ingredients that support wellness. Each elixir is designed with a purpose, whether it’s to reduce stress, enhance focus, or boost mood.
Their blends incorporate adaptogens and superfoods such as Rhodiola, ginseng, and turmeric, all of which offer scientifically backed health benefits. Rhodiola is known for its ability to improve cognitive function and combat fatigue, while ginseng helps with endurance and mental clarity. Turmeric, with its potent anti-inflammatory properties, further enhances overall well-being.
What I appreciate most about Curious Elixirs is their dedication to using organic, clean ingredients while avoiding refined sugars and preservatives. Their blends elevate the drinking experience beyond just taste—each sip is an act of self-care.
All the Bitter
Bitters are often overlooked in the world of functional beverages.
Made by former sommeliers, these alcohol-free bitters bring complexity and depth to drinks while also offering digestive and wellness benefits. Each bottle is packed with organic, whole-plant extractions like milk thistle, dandelion root, and burdock root—ingredients renowned for their liver-supporting and detoxifying properties (also found in Rasasvada). Milk thistle, in particular, is well-documented for its ability to protect the liver from toxins, while dandelion root stimulates digestion and supports gut health. The result is a high-quality, holistic product that enhances both flavor and well-being.
Wooden Spoon Herbs
Wooden Spoon Herbs is a standout brand in the world of herbal wellness, offering tinctures, tonics, and teas that are deeply rooted in traditional herbal medicine. What sets this brand apart is its commitment to using whole plants—no synthetic isolates or artificial ingredients.
Their formulas focus on adaptogens, nervines, and nutrient-dense herbs to support stress management, immune function, and overall vitality. Ingredients like tulsi (holy basil), nettle, and ashwagandha work synergistically to nourish the body and enhance resilience. Tulsi is known for its ability to regulate stress hormones, while nettle provides essential minerals that support energy levels and overall wellness. Ashwagandha, a well-documented adaptogen, helps balance cortisol levels and promote relaxation.
Wooden Spoon Herbs prioritizes sustainable, ethical sourcing, ensuring that every product maintains the highest level of integrity and potency.
Why I Trust These Brands
Trust is everything when it comes to what I put into my body. These brands have earned my trust by staying true to their mission of using only natural, ethically sourced ingredients. They prioritize quality over mass production and wellness over profit margins. By choosing these products, I know I’m not only supporting my own health but also a movement toward more mindful, intentional consumption.
For those looking to make more conscious choices in their beverages, I wholeheartedly recommend Rasasvada, Curious Elixirs, and All the Bitter.
