What Is An Alcohol-Safe Workplace & Why You Should Care
Is Your Business An Alcohol-Safe Workplace?
The workplace environment we are in today has evolved along with our technology, at a pace many of us struggle to keep up with. As we evolve together, it has become more important than ever to ensuring the safety, mental health and overall well-being of ourselves and our employees.
While many organizations focus on physical safety measures and health initiatives, one critical aspect is often overlooked: Alcohol safety in the workplace.
An alcohol-safe workplace encompasses policies, practices, and a culture that promotes responsible alcohol consumption and supports individuals who may struggle with alcohol-related issues.
As someone who comes from both a military and a corporate background, I know first hand just how important this topic is and feel it is time to dive in! In this article, we are going to delve into what constitutes an alcohol-safe workplace and why it's essential for both employees and employers to prioritize this aspect of workplace safety.
Defining an Alcohol-Safe Workplace
An alcohol-safe workplace goes far beyond simply prohibiting alcohol consumption during work hours. It encompasses a comprehensive approach that addresses various aspects of alcohol use both during and after work hours and its potential impact on the workplace environment.
Some Key components of an alcohol-safe workplace include:
Clear Policies and Guidelines: Establishing clear policies regarding alcohol consumption, including guidelines for social events, company-sponsored gatherings, and workplace functions. These policies should outline expectations, consequences for policy violations, and avenues for seeking help or support.
I know this sounds a bit like the fine print on a contract but it is important and something that needs to be addressed and IMPLEMENTED. This is where Untoxicated comes in! Bring in Untoxicated to help provide these fun social events, gathers, and functions!
Education and Awareness Programs: Providing employees with education and awareness programs that highlight the risks associated with alcohol misuse, signs of alcohol dependency, and available resources for support and treatment.
These programs aim to promote informed decision-making and create a supportive environment for those seeking help. This doesn’t need to be boring! Untoxicated can bring a fun and interactive education to your workplace that is engaging and provides delicious alcohol-free products.
No hum-drum monologues here… provide an education that will make you and your employees feel truly cared for and inspired.
Supportive Culture: Fostering a workplace culture that promotes open dialogue, non-judgmental support, and destigmatization of alcohol-related issues. Employees should feel comfortable seeking assistance without fear of discrimination or reprisal.
We can often feel pressured into drinking or drinking more than we would like simply to feel connected and accepted. By providing fun and inclusive drink options - you may end up being somebodies hero.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): Offering access to confidential EAPs that provide counseling, resources, and referrals for employees dealing with alcohol-related concerns, including addiction, stress, or mental health issues. EAPs play a crucial role in early intervention and support for individuals facing challenges.
This doesn’t need to be complicated! Mindful drinking and mindful living go hand in hand and can all come from the same source.
Leadership Role Modeling: Leadership plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for alcohol safety in the workplace. By modeling responsible behavior, advocating for supportive policies, and prioritizing employee well-being, leaders can positively influence organizational culture and employee attitudes towards alcohol use.
Lead by example. Show up for yourself and those who are looking up to you simply by learning more about the alcohol-free products that are available to you and how they can support your over all well-being.

This is all so important, Jessa! Thank you for writing this. Have you connected with Heather Lowe from Ditched the Drink? She is a loud advocate for alcohol-safe / alcohol-free workplaces.
It's a great topic, for sure.
Taking it one step further, the policy component should be one of inclusivity. One negative experience I have with workplace social events or even industry social events is the lack of thought to 'fun NA options'.
You talked about creating a mindful culture in the hospitality industry earlier this year - the same type of mindfulness should be made aware to anyone creating social events in work / professional environments (callback to https://jessafrances.substack.com/p/creating-a-mindful-drinking-culture)
